    Description

This CD contains a transcription of all of the 1840 census for the western counties in Virginia in 1840.  The following counties are included:  Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Grayson, henry, Lee, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, Roanoke, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington and Wythe.  The 1840 census was written on two pages with each entry going from the left side of one page across to the right side of the second page making this very difficult to read as numbers are used primarily from page to page.  To get the full information, one has to read across both pages to find all of the tidbits of information found on them.  There is only the names of each of the "head of household" with everyone else found with a number of check mark, except if there is a "pensioner" in the household.  The American War Veterans and those from the War of 1812 are noted with their name and age on page two.  Included are personal information about "idiots or deaf", teachers, farmers, sailors and if there is a school then the type of school and numbers of students.  Most of this latter information is not transcribed in this census as most are interested only in page one with the "head of household" name and his family.  A full name index is included with the CD which in the PDF format.
