    Description

This is an original, hand written and hand illuminated grant of arms from the College of Arms of England.
The recipient, James Carlton Stitts, was born in Liverpool in 1851. He was a successful marine consulting engineer and a wealthy philanthropist, He served on the boards of  numerous civic organizations, including the University of Liverpool, which awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1930. The University still awards the James Carlton Stitt medals annually to outstanding students in mechanical engineering.
The document and box are in very good condition. The only significant damage is a very small tear in the center of the bottom of the document. it can be clearly seen at the top of the photo of the seals and does not detract from the document. The document measures approximately 20" X 24" not including the seals. Framed dimensions are approximately 34" X 45 1/2" X 4 1/2".
The document is matted and framed and ready for display. The document is "free floated" in the mount. There is no tape, glue or adhesive of any type used in the mounting. The back of the frame can be unscrewed and the document lifted out without difficulty. This type of mounting and framing will usually cost 0 or more.
