***During the mid and later 1800's virtually all American glass companies were using manganese in their glass formula.  Around 1915 the use of manganese was discontinued and selenium became the chemical of choice as a clarifying & stabilizing agent.  In time it became apparent that the appearance of the glass took on a "purple" color.  Eventually it was noticed that the change occurred when the glass was exposed to sunlight.  The exposure to the UV rays of the sun caused the manganese to react and turn the glass color purple.  The more the exposure, the darker the purple.***
