My dad bought this vise new around 1962, probably at the local Ace Hardware. We both used it a bunch, building a go-kart and mini-bike and much more. I don’t recall how I was misusing it, probably trying to bend a 5’ long 1” steel rod or similar, but the swivel base broke. Dad took it to a welding shop and the owner brazed the base pieces directly to the body. This may sound like a stop-gap repair, but this was at least 50 years ago and it has worked perfectly nearly every day since. Actually, the swivel feature can let go when you don’t want it to so I’m calling it an upgrade.
Just recently I added lightly used hardened jaws and pressed in a bronze bushing where the screw goes through the front and sized it for perfect alignment with no slop. I sandblasted all the parts to be painted and polished all the parts to be left bare. One coat of primer and two coats of sprayed (not rattle can) topcoats of Rustoleum Sunrise Red.
Looks and works better than a new one! Proudly made in the USA.
