PAIR OF AMERICAN STERLING SILVER REPOUSSE CANDLESTICKS
MADE BY THEODORE B. STARR, NEW YORK 1900-1912
Pleased to offer this wonderful pair of American candlesticks made & retailed by Theodore B. Starr.
Of classic style, with elements of
Rococo
as well as Art Nouveau design. Two matching pair of candlesticks on rounded square filled bases. Scroll work adorns the bottom edge of each base, and encases each quadrant of beautiful flower & leaf repousse work, that continues up the bell shaped base.  The pattern carries onto the stem, with florets and vertical scroll work culminating into a baluster terminal carrying the same flower & leaf pattern to the top of each candlestick. Each bobeche continues the scroll work and sits firmly on each candlestick.
Each candlestick stand 10 inches tall, on a 5 1/2 inch square base. The candlesticks are filled, and thus are extremely heavy and weigh 2.4 lbs each. (4.8lbs)
The bases are sterling silver and stamped Theodore B. Starr, New York, Sterling...with a pattern number of 4245 and marked 10in (height)
These candlesticks are in absolutely magnificent condition in consideration of being over 120 years old showing no dents, dings, cracks, splits repairs or damage of any kind. Only hand polished with bright warm patina. Both stand firm & level
Theodore B. Starr was one of the most prominent and influential jewelers and silversmiths in New York.  Founded in 1862, Starr went into partnership in 1864 with Herman Marcus, and were known as Starr & Marcus.
In 1877 Marcus left to join Tiffany & Co.  Starr bought back control of the company, and became Theodore B. Starr, of 206 Fifth Ave. The company was incorporated in 1907 by Starr's son.  Ultimately the company was acquired by Reed & Barton in 1918. They were known for their flatware & holloware of the highest quality and made by many well regarded silversmiths of the period.  T.B. Starr's work is displayed in the Metropolitan Museum in NYC.
Starr desired to create a
retail
establishment that developed "an educated demand for beauty".
